What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?
Lab grown diamonds have the exact same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural mined diamonds. They have the same carbon crystal structure as mined diamonds, they’re just as strong as mined diamonds, and they look just like mined diamonds. The only difference between lab grown diamonds and natural mined diamonds is how they are made. Mined diamonds form in the earth’s crust and are later mined, while lab grown diamonds are made by scientists in a lab.
How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?
There are two main processes used to make lab grown diamonds: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).
The HPHT method mimics the way diamonds form naturally in the earth’s crust under heat and pressure. With this method, scientists start with a diamond seed crystal, a tiny piece of diamond, and place it into pure carbon. They they expose the seed and carbon to extremely high pressures and temperatures, which causes the carbon to melt and form a diamond around the diamond seed.
With the CVD method, scientists start with a slim slice of diamond seed and place it into to a sealed chamber. They then heat the chamber and fill it with a carbon-rich gas. Next, they ionize the gas into a plasma (often using microwave technology), which causes the carbon to break away from the rest of the gas. This pure carbon then begins to adhere to the diamond seed within the chamber, slowly growing into a larger diamond layer by layer.

At our Appleton jewelry store, we focus on carrying HPHT lab grown diamonds, rather than CVD lab grown diamonds. We prioritize carrying HPHT lab grown diamonds because they are more “transparent” than the CVD variety and they’re also generally always colorless. We personally find that HPHT lab grown diamonds tend to be more beautiful, so we focus on carrying them over CVD lab grown diamonds. While most other stores in the Appleton area carry primarily CVD lab grown diamonds, we carry a wide variety of HPHT lab grown diamonds.
Why Do Some People Prefer Lab Grown Diamonds?
People tend to prefer lab grown diamonds over mined diamonds for one of two reasons (or for both of these reasons): price and mining concerns.
First, let’s talk about price. A lab grown diamond will have a much more affordable price tag than a mined diamond with the same qualities. On average, a lab grown diamond will cost 30% to 50% less than a mined diamond with the same carat weight and qualities— which is an enormous savings! Many people don’t want to spend a fortune on their diamond jewelry and love that they can save money by opting for a lab grown diamond. Then, other people choose a lab grown diamond because it allows their budget to stretch much farther, helping them fit a larger, more high quality diamond into their price range.
Then, let’s talk a bit about mining. By their very nature, natural mined diamonds must be mined. Many people do not like that natural diamonds are connected to the mining process. So they decide to select a lab grown diamond, since lab grown diamonds do not involve mining.
